Conditions We Treat

Neck & back injuries (whiplash)

The same crash, fall or hit that causes a concussion often injures the neck or low back — whiplash-type pain, or a pinched nerve.

Common symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness after a crash or fall (whiplash)
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Low back pain
  • Pain, numbness or tingling that travels into an arm or leg (a pinched nerve)
  • Reduced range of motion

How we evaluate it

A PM&R physician evaluates the cervical and lumbar spine, nerve involvement and how the injury affects daily function, and coordinates imaging when it is indicated.

How we treat it

Cervical and lumbar evaluation, imaging coordination, physical therapy, referrals for interventional pain management when indicated, and rehabilitation alongside concussion recovery.

  • Physical therapy for the neck and back
  • Referrals for interventional pain management when indicated
  • Rehabilitation planned alongside concussion recovery, in one plan

What the guidelines say

Living Concussion Guideline for Adults (ONF)

Neck or other pain that significantly limits function should be investigated and treated at the same time as concussion symptoms.

Amsterdam Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport

Cervicovestibular rehabilitation is recommended when neck pain, headaches or dizziness last more than 10 days.
